Details of the tagline contest are given prior to finalists being announced at the Space Life Sciences Directorate All-hands meeting on July 9.
The Space Life Sciences (SLS)Tagline Contest winner is Rachel Brady of the Human Adaptation and Countermeasures Office. Brady’s victorious tagline “Exploring Space, Enhancing Life,” will be a commonly seen element of all the SLS Web sites and content.

The purpose of the tagline contest:

The first of its kind, the tagline contest submission phase was open from June 5 to June 21 and more than 150 submissions were collected. By June 26, the SLS Strategic Communications Team chose four finalists and the voting phase began until a final decision was made on July 6.

Dr. Erge Edgu-Fry, senior scientist and member of the SLS Strategic Communications Team and project leader for the tagline contest, speaks about the contest at the SLSD All-hands meeting.

The tagline contest was proposed and organized by the SLS Strategic Communications Team. The team as a whole made decisions and chose the four finalist taglines, and the directorate ultimately voted on their favorite.

“We wanted to convey a sense of unity across the directorate and to provide a way for all members of the Space Life Sciences to speak with one voice,” said Erge Edgu-Fry, Ph.D., senior scientist and member of the SLS Strategic Communications Team and project leader for the tagline contest. “To do so, we asked them to come up with a tagline that was clear, concise, memorable and coordinated with our key messages.”

Winner and runners-up:

At the SLS All-hands meeting at the Gilruth on July 9, Brady was announced as the winner. The finalists were Todd Elliott, Julie Esteves and Stephen Vanderark.

Brady will have lunch with SA Director Dr. Jeffrey R. Davis and JSC Director Mike Coats sometime in August.

Contest feedback:

At the end of the contest, Edgu-Fry said much feedback was obtained from the directorate, stating they “felt more a part of SLS by contributing in a decision that impacted everyone at the end than they did before.”

Edgu-Fry said the SLS Strategic Communications Team, led by Elizabeth Richard, Wyle senior strategist for SA, will continue to identify ways to improve communications both within the directorate and external to NASA in the future.

“We are in the midst of change in Space Life Sciences,” Edgu-Fry said. “Our strategic plan is leading us to new ways of doing business and seeking ways to more rapidly innovate. In short, we innovate by using an integrated approach, finding the best solutions and by creating sustained enthusiasm.”
