Innovators Honored at JSC Inventors' Luncheon

JSC employees and family gathered at the Gilruth Recreation Center earlier this month to give special merit to civil servant innovators at the 2003 Inventors’ Luncheon.

Center Director Jefferson D. Howell, Jr. presented 13 plaques, bearing an engraved duplicate of the original artwork of the patent issued from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, to 11 civil servants for their revolutionary work and patent success. This year, additional plaques were presented to each division chief of the awardees to show appreciation for their continued support.

The tradition in honoring JSC inventors for their successful innovations and patent achievement began in 1986. Hosted by the Technology Transfer and Commercialization Office (TTCO), the luncheon provides an opportunity for employees to learn more about some of NASA’s latest technology breakthroughs.

Among last year’s technological advances that were recognized at the luncheon were a system for growing three-dimensional biological cells and tissue; a microwave treatment for atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to fatty deposits; and a docking system that will allow spacecraft to dock more easily and safely.

“JSC inventors are instrumental in building and maintaining cutting-edge technology,” said Charlene Gilbert, Director of TTCO. “Their patent success is highly relevant in sharing JSC’s successful and valuable discoveries.”

This sharing of technology lends U.S. companies increased productivity, increased profit and reduced costs, therefore boosting their competitive technical edge and bringing value to the economy.

Those honored at the 2003 Inventors’ Luncheon were:·G. Dickey Arndt and Patrick W. Fink for their Endothelium Preserving Microwave Treatment for Atherosclerosis

·G. Dickey Arndt and Phong H. Ngo for their Method for Locating a Concealed Object

·Franklin R. Chang-Diaz for his Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket Engine

·Michael K. Ewert for his Solar-Powered Refrigeration System (two patents)

·Thomas J. Goodwin for his Growth Stimulation of Biological Cells and Tissue by Electromagnetic Fields and uses Thereof

·James L. Lewis for his Androgynous, Reconfigurable Closed Loop Feedback Controlled Low Impact Docking System with Load Sensing Electromagnetic Capture Ring

·Dennis R. Morrison for his Microencapsulated Bioactive Agents and Method Making

·Duane L. Pierson for his Evaluation of Biofilms and the Effects of Biocides Thereon

·Robert L. Shuler, Jr. for his Method and Apparatus for Reducing the Vulnerability of Latches to Single Event Upsets

·David A. Wolf for his Growth Stimulation of Biological Cells and Tissue by Electromagnetic Fields and uses Thereof
