Astronauts
have been capturing photographs of the ever-changing Earth for more
than 40 years, and NASA has been cataloging and studying them since
the beginning. This page is an archive of images that have been
featured on the JSC Web. For more images, visit Astronaut
Photography of Earth.

New
York City and East Coast City Lights - Bright city lights
delineate the eastern coast of the United States in the darkness.
New York City is the largest and brightest metropolitan area along
the coast. The second largest city in this image is Philadelphia,
Penn. |
Los
Angeles at Night - After sunset, the borders of Los Angeles
are defined by its dark terrain features -- the Santa Monica and San
Gabriel Mountains to the north and the Chino Hills and Santa Ana Mountains
to the east and southeast -- and its well-lit streets and freeways. |
Lake
Michigan Ice - This image of Lake Michigan shows a number
of large pieces of ice collected along the shore. A colder than normal
North American winter has delayed the opening of the St. Lawrence
Seaway and will probably delay the start of the local growing season.
|
Page,
Arizona - This isolated community near the northern Arizona
border is of special interest because of its origin and location.
Page was created to house workers and their families during the construction
of nearby Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. |
Buenos
Aires, Argentina - Buenos Aires, Argentina, is one of the
largest cities seen by orbiting crews. Twelve million people live
in this city, often called "the Paris of the South." This image was
taken by an Expedition Six crewmember on the International Space Station. |
Owens
Lake, California - Even from space, the topography of California's
Sierra Nevada Mountains is impressive. The range drops nearly 3,353
meters (11,000 feet) to the floor of Owens Valley. The Sierra Nevada
landscape is well known for its deep, glacially scoured valleys. |
London,
England - This nighttime view of the British capital offers
unique insight into the city's urban density and infrastructure as
highlighted by electrical lighting. Interpreting the brightest areas
as the most populated, the population density drops off rapidly from
the bright urban center. |
Australian
Bush Fires - In early 2003, southeastern Australia experienced
an unprecedented bushfire emergency. The fire season resulted in numerous
large fires over much of the Great Dividing Range as well as an enormous
smoke pall over neighboring areas. |
Crater
Lake, Oregon - Crater Lake National Park celebrated its centennial
in 2002. When the U.S. Congress designated the area as a park in 1902,
it could not have imagined that the landscape would inspire photographers
viewing Crater Lake from space. |
Baltimore,
Maryland - STS-113 astronauts photographed the northeastern
United States in early December 2002, blanketed in fresh snow. This
image shows the city of Baltimore and the surrounding area. |
